Houston, Texas – (May 4, 2026) — The Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP), the leading global authority in materials protection and performance, has had key standards incorporated into updated federal pipeline safety regulations, following recent rulemakings issued by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
The updates incorporate by reference revised editions of NACE SP0206 and NACE SP0502 into 49 C.F.R. Parts 192 and 195, further aligning regulatory requirements with current industry practices for managing internal and external corrosion in pipeline systems.
“Standards are increasingly becoming part of the regulatory framework, not just guidance,” said Tim Gonzalez, Vice President of Energy Integrity Solutions at AMPP. “The incorporation of updated editions of SP0206 and SP0502 reflects a continued shift from best practice to expectation. Clear alignment between regulations and current standards helps operators reduce uncertainty while strengthening corrosion management programs across the industry.”
The rulemakings are part of a broader set of actions from PHMSA to update, clarify, and amend federal pipeline safety regulations, affecting operators across gas, hazardous liquid, carbon dioxide, and liquefied natural gas infrastructure.
This development reflects a continued move toward performance-based safety frameworks supported by consensus standards, in which industry-developed technical expertise is directly integrated into regulatory oversight.
AMPP works alongside regulators and industry stakeholders to ensure standards remain technically sound, practical to implement, and responsive to evolving infrastructure challenges.
The direct final rules incorporating updated standards are scheduled to take effect January 1, 2027, unless adverse comments are received.
