Protective Coating Technician Certification

The Protective Coating Technician certification is for protective coatings professionals with 1-2 years of work experience and knowledge in the areas of coatings system selection, surface preparation, coating application, coating inspection and quality control, use of testing instruments, and documentation and data reporting.

Who should pursue and apply?

Anyone involved in corrosion control and integrity management of fixed offshore structures. The curriculum benefits varied levels of professionals including:

  • Planning, engineering, and supervisory level personnel responsible for industrial coatings and linings who are new to the field or position
  • Specifiers, maintenance, and project engineers in all industries
  • Marketing representatives of coatings materials or equipment

How to achieve Protective Coating Technician certification

  1. Meet work experience requirements

    Bachelor's degree in physical sciences or engineering with 1 year of verifiable work experience in the protective coatings field

    OR

    2 years of verifiable work experience in the protective coatings field

  2. Enroll and complete course requirements

    Successful completion of the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course or an equivalent training

  3. Meet certification requirements

    Approved Protective Coating Technician Application

    Corrosion Foundations Micro-Credential

  4. Take required exams

    Certification Exam – NACE PCS 1 - Basic Principles Exam (delivered via Examity)

Renewal requirements

An approved recertification application is required every 3 years. The work experience requirement for renewals for all certifications is one and half (1.5) years for the most recent three (3) year period. Additionally, some certifications have other requirements related to responsibility in charge.

As you prepare for renewal, please visit My Certification Portal to log and manage your work experience and Professional Development Hours (PDH's) needed. Your work experience and PDH's will be submitted as part of your renewal application but you can input PDH's at any time. See the certification renewal guide for PDH's requirements, our sample training PDH guide, and our PDH how-to videos.

Certification holders are required to pay a non-refundable processing fee for renewal.
