Hello Johntavious,
The corrosion industry has many opportunities, so the certification you focus on first depends on a few things:
1.) What aspect of the corrosion industry are you interested in? Cathodic protection, internal corrosion, coatings, integrity management. There are certifications in all of those areas.
2.) What sector of the corrosion industry are you interested in? Pipelines, refineries / plants, infrastructure (bridges, buildings, etc.), onshore, offshore, etc. Each sector has a particular method or combination of methods of corrosion control, which goes back to question #1.
3.) How soon would you like to achieve your first certification? Some level 1 certs require zero documented work experience and/or education, while others require 2+ years and formal education (Associate's or Bachelor's degrees) in technical / engineering disciplines.
I'm assuming that since you are very new to the idea of the corrosion industry, that you probably don't really have answers to the questions above, and that's ok. I would recommend that you attend a local chapter meeting, so that you can talk to some folks that are in the corrosion industry and get some different perspectives. Bossier falls within the ArkLaTex Chapter, and we typically meet once in the Fall and once in the Spring in the Kilgore, TX or Longview, TX areas. If you'd like, send me your email address and we'll add you to our mailing list for upcoming ArkLaTex Chapter events / activities.
Regards,
KMR
