The Marine Technical Community of Interest is a group of people (both AMPP members and nonmembers) who have come together for the purpose of furthering a common cause by sharing wisdom, knowledge, information, and/or data for studying the corrosion mechanisms, causes, effects, and corrosion control remedies for ships, structures, and equipment exposed to marine environments, and to disseminate information on the research, development, and performance of materials, coatings, and improved or innovative methods to mitigate problems related to marine corrosion.

Corrosion protection of methanol fuel tanks

Methanol is corrosive to certain materials, and the use of methanol as a marine fuel shall require corrosion protection. Methanol fuel tanks shall have an appropriate grade of stainless steel or methanol-resistant coating to the tank interior. However, methanol fuel is a particular challenge for all storage facilities, including tanks, pipes and vessels. Conventional protective coatings available in the market are not suitable for continuous contact with methanol. They get chemically attacked, softened and dissolved when getting in touch with this liquid.

Is there a coating specification, coating standard applicable to methanol fuel?

Do you have any idea about this?

Feel free to give your comments.

    Thank you.
