You may find it helpful to explore the AMPP Knowledge Hub, which contains a large collection of technical papers, conference proceedings, journal articles, standards references, and historical NACE/SSPC publications. There is existing literature that discusses magnetite stability, adhesion to carbon steel, and the implications of coating application over residual oxide layers, particularly in water service and internal pipe environments.
Within the Knowledge Hub, I recommend searching terms such as magnetite stability, internal pipe coatings, surface preparation requirements, oxide layers under coatings, and coating adhesion over corrosion products. You may also find relevant discussions in AMPP conference papers and CORROSION journal articles that address whether magnetite can remain adherent or become destabilized when isolated from the electrolyte after coating application.
If you have access through your organization or membership, it can be a very valuable starting point for both technical justification and references you can share with the coating manufacturer or stakeholders.
Please feel free to reach out if you need help navigating the platform or narrowing down specific resources.
Best regards,

Subject: Magnetite Adhesion Characteristics Under Polymer Coating
I am looking for any information, articles, books, publications, etc. that can help me with the stability of an established layer of magnetite under a polymer coating. Manufacture of the polymer coating states the carbon steel metal needs to be ~95% clean metal but attempts to clean the ID of the pipe (hydrolyzing) have been ineffective of removing the magnetite corrosion layer. Teh concern is if we were to install the coating over the magnetite, this placing the barrier between the magnetite and the flow of water, would this cause the magnetite to become less stable with its adhesion to the carbon steel piping.
Thank you in advance for your input.
