Response: It's really a combination, but if I had to point to one, I'd start with the specification. More aggressive environments typically require higher-performing-and often more complex-systems, which can mean specialized equipment, tighter surface-preparation requirements, greater environmental controls, and more demanding application procedures. Where I see the biggest breakdown is when a coating checks all the performance boxes on paper, but it isn't realistically feasible to apply under the actual project conditions or with the contractor capabilities available in that market. Surface preparation is still arguably the single biggest field variable, and environmental conditions, coating application, coating cure, holiday testing, and inspection are all critical, but the specification needs to account for those realities from the beginning. A lifecycle analysis emphasizes that application quality is one of the biggest predictors of actual service life. Even the highest-performing coating can fail prematurely when surface preparation or application is inadequate. So ultimately, the best specification isn't simply the one that identifies the highest-performing material; it's the one that identifies a system that can both deliver the required performance and be consistently installed correctly in the field.
