Question: What are some pitfalls or common mistakes that you see made when specifying coating projects?
Response: There are a few mistakes I see repeatedly: not fully accounting for the service environment and asset criticality, overlooking constructability and application challenges/constraints for the project, and failing to clearly define inspection requirements before the project starts. Some higher-performance systems require specialized plural-component equipment and experienced applicators, so a technically strong specification can still struggle if it isn't practical to execute in the field. Just as importantly, surface preparation, coating application, and QA/QC measures all need clearly defined acceptance criteria because these are all strong predictors of actual service life. That last piece is relatively easy to improve: define the inspection requirements and hold points in the ITP, then review them at the pre-job meeting so the owner, inspector, manufacturer, and contractor all understand the expectations before work begins.
