Hello Everyone!
Here is an update on the most recent Research Program Committee meeting held on 7-18-2023:
This was the first meeting of the RPC with the new Chair and Vice Chair (myself and Raghu Srinivasan, respectively); once again, I would like to thank Mike Hurley for all of his dedication and excellent efforts over the past 2 years getting the RPC to where it is today! Mike will continue serving the RPC as Chair of the AMPP John A. Sedriks SEED Grant.
Raghu will be taking over as the Research Task Force Chair for the 2025 AMPP Conference.
This was the last meeting for our AMPP Staff support person, Dustin Young. He is "moving on to greener pastures," and we wish him the best. The RPC would not be where it is without his loyal support and guidance over the past several years.
Ed Mann will be taking over as the AMPP Liaison support staff for the RPC until Dustin's position can be filled. Ed has long been a supporter of the RPC and we look forward to working with him in the coming months.
Below is a brief summary of items covered and outstanding items needing to be addressed.
Sammy Miles (Corrosion Journal) reported on some initiatives the Journal is acting on: a series of Corrosion and Health podcasts (~ 30 minutes each) on various topics such as water quality (Flint MI), carcinogenic agents from corrosion processes, biomedical corrosion and antimicrobial effects of metal alloys, to name a few. The magazines of the Association will also be initiating a "Sustainability Focus": Materials Performance will have a "Sustainability Corner," CoatingsPro will have a new "Sustainability Section," and the Corrosion Journal will have a "Perspective on Sustainability and Hot Topics" webpage. We look forward to interfacing with the Journal staff and supporting these initiatives. Please contact Sammy if you have any questions or suggestions!
Lesley Martinez reported on the status of the 2024 AMPP Conference and Expo with regard to the RTS/RIP and SPS sessions. The call for abstracts will be published 21 August. Please see attached list of the RTS/RIP and SPS sessions and Chairs. Please contact Raghu if you are interested in helping out with the RTS/RIP sessions or the SPS for 2024 or 2025. Other good news:
To refresh your memories, the final recommendation from the RIP/RTS Task Force for the SPS at AMPP 2024:
- Continue to have 3 categories for the posters to be judged in, with the third to be a new combined category:
- Fontana (Corrosion Engineering)
- Pourbaix (Corrosion Science)
- Herro-Appleman (Applied Materials Protection Technology)
- Increase the awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in all three categories (awards have been at this level for several years)
- Fontana: 1st place $2000 (increase from $1500); 2nd place $1500 (increase from $1000) and 3rd place $1000 (increase from $500)
- Pourbaix: 1st place $2000 (increase from $1500); 2nd place $1500 (increase from $1000) and 3rd place $1000 (increase from $500)
- Herro-Appleman: 1st place $2000 (increase from $1500); 2nd place $1500 (increase from $1000) and 3rd place $1000 (increase from $500)
- Increase the number of undergrad awards from Best Undergrad Poster to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place undergrad posters overall
- 1st place: $1000
- 2nd place: $500
- 3rd place: $250
The top 3 awards in each category is not limited to graduate students only, but in order to spread out the awards, any undergrad poster placing in the top 3 for any of the three categories will not be eligible for also winning one of the top 3 overall (i.e., an undergrad poster could score in the top 3 in a category and not be eligible to win a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place overall in the undergrad category).
Lesley also reported on AMPP being the organizer for the International Conference on Environmental Degradation of Materials in Nuclear Power Systems in 2025 and 2027 (locations TBD). Another opportunity for the RPC to have input!
The RPC is currently looking for someone to serve as the RPC Liaison to the Conference and Expo Program Committee (CEPC); it is a minimal time commitment, only needing to report to the CEPC what the RTS/RIP and SPS sessions are for the upcoming Conference every year. It is a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of symposium session organization. Please contact Doug Hansen if you are interested.
Florent Bocher has volunteered to serve as the RPC Liaison to the AMPP Standards Program Committee. Flo will update us at the next RPC mtg. Many thanks, Flo!
The AMPP John A. Sedriks SEED Grant RFP has been finalized by the SEED Grant Task Force. Many thanks to Raghu and the TF for all of their efforts! The SEED Grant proposal submission deadline is 1 October 2023; please keep an eye out for the RFP posting on the AMPP website. If you have questions, please contact Mike Hurley.
Finally, Ed Manns will be sending out a Doodle Poll to find out when everyone will be available for the next RPC meeting, scheduled to be held sometime in the Mid-September timeframe.
Don't forget to sign up for the Research Technical Community of Interest(TCI): https://www.ampp.org/membership/communities
We will be using the Research TCI as a forum for announcements and discussions of interest to the RPC and Research Community. No need to be an AMPP member to join, so please spread the word!
That's all for now. Have a great summer, and I will see you all in September!
-Doug.
