The Fossil, Nuclear, Hydro Power Generation Technical Community of Interest is a group of people (both AMPP members and nonmembers) who have come together for the purpose of furthering a common cause by sharing wisdom, knowledge, information, and/or data to facilitate identification and resolution of corrosion-related problems of materials in various energy generating and delivery systems: nuclear, fossil fuel, radioactive liquid storage and transfer systems, and in the utilization of geothermal resources.

    Dear All,

Welcome everyone to the Technical Committee (TC) 08 Utilities which currently includes the following three Technical Communities of Interest (TCIs):

    1. TCI Fossil, Nuclear, Hydro Power Generation
    2. TCI Renewable Energy (including Waste Energy)
    3. TCI Water Treatment

I am the new chair of the TC 08 and want to welcome and thank all of you for participating in this experience exchange committee. The success of this committee relies on us sharing our experience and knowledge for the safety and reliability of the Utilities assets.

My name is Paul Su, and I am a corrosion and materials engineer with over 30 years of experience in engineering and research for aerospace, chemicals, and property insurance industries. I am excited to work with all of you to participate in the Utilities TC and its associated TCIs.

As noted on AMPP's website portal, Get Involved, Technical Committee (TC) chairs report directly to the AMPP Technical Program Committee and are responsible for overseeing various Technical Communities of Interest of various subject matters. These committees will be responsible for approving and disbanding current and future Technical Communities of Interest (TCI's), appointing leadership positions, and identifying gaps within their respective subject matter for the organization to act on.

Technical Committee (TC) chairs are selected by the AMPP Technical Program Committee (TPC) for a 2-year term. Once the chairs are selected, they can select up to 14 additional voting members maximum (15 total voting members including chair) for their committee per the AMPP Global Center Charter. In addition to selecting their members, they will also determine the term limits for each member of their committee.

Once we have at least 5 voting committee members in place, our first order of business likely will be to meet (virtually) to discuss the current and potential future Process Industries' TCIs.

As a member of a Technical Community of Interest, people are able to participate in:

    • Discussion at-will on the selected topic via our online community platform
    • Present information (by members and non-members)
    • Connect via meetings hosted on a collaboration platform, via teleconferences or at conferences (either regional or global events).
    • TCIs have unlimited membership. Any AMPP member or nonmember can join a TCI.

If you feel you are not able/willing to join us at this time, as a minimum, I would ask that you think of other materials/corrosion SMEs in your industry, company, organization, who might be interested in becoming a voting member and/or leading a Utilities TCI, and forward this note to them.

It is important to connect with less-tenured materials and corrosion SMEs around the word, as AMPP is a world-side association that is eager to engage and transfer knowledge to new and younger members of the workforce/community, so please consider all your colleagues and connections.

Please contact me via email (pocheng.su@fmglobal.com) or though the AMPP Technical Community of Interest member "send message" tool.   Thank you.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Su, Ph.D.

Paul - If I may, I'd like to suggest renaming the 'Renewables' to 'Alternative Energy,' as both nuclear, hydro, and geothermal are also demonstrated to be renewable. They are also sustainable. Alternative energy sources have not demonstrated this, so they are still considered to be 'alternatives' and a speculative part of the energy market, not for base demand (see ERCOT's lessons learned, as well as gas supplies in the midwest over the last few winters). Another alternative would be to keep it as renewable and rightly include all of the renewable sources.

I'm happy to discuss further or we can bring it up at our next meeting. I know AMPP wants to use the buzzword of renewables, but that would not be accurate unless nuclear, hydro, and geothermal are bundled with it,

    All my best,

    Hi Craig,

Thank you for the input. I am aware of the discussion regarding "Renewables," "Alternative Energy," carbon emissions, etc., in the power industry, and it will be a good topic for discussion in our next meeting.

    Best regards,

    Paul
