Project scope
The first of these programs will address the material challenges associated with the use of ammonia as a fuel in maritime applications. Ammonia is being strongly considered as a future fuel to decarbonize shipping. Ammonia does not release CO2 emissions when used in power generation, and it is easier to store and transport than H2. Various barriers to the adoption of ammonia as a fuel for maritime applications (such as safety regulations, infrastructure, or technical maturity) have been identified, and progress is being made. However, materials performance and reliability in ammonia must be better assessed.
AMPP solicits proposals to conduct a comprehensive literature review of the corrosion and materials degradation risks applicable to the use of ammonia as a marine fuel. The literature review should include journal articles, materials selection practices, corrosion control methods, and industry standards. It should focus on the issues that can be expected in this new application.
The results of this project will be published as publicly available technical guidance that will benefit the entire maritime industry and AMPP community. The report shall combine a technical understanding of corrosion risks in ammonia marine fuel, a collection of relevant standards, a definition of the critical research and standards gaps, and a prioritized roadmap to address those gaps. It will improve communication between the different stakeholders, and it will establish AMPP as a key player in this growing area.
