The cleaning, coating, and nondestructive testing of corrosion-susceptible and other surfaces requires extensive manual labor, often at vertical heights that can create a dangerous occupational environment. Drones, also known as unmanned aerial systems (UAS), can be leveraged to perform some of these tasks, including cleaning and coating, while keeping workers safely on the ground. Drone capabilities have significantly evolved over the past decade, and it is expected that the ubiquity of such systems will continue to increase in the years to come. This paper and presentation from Robert Dahlstrom of Apellix and Chuck Rosales of AkzoNobel details the development ...
Concrete is claimed to be the second most common manmade material (after potable water), with about 1 cubic yard produced for every person on the planet per year, resulting in more than twice as much concrete being used as any other building material. Concrete is a composite of sand and gravel bound in a cement matrix. Much of this concrete is reinforced with steel to improve its tensile properties. Thermodynamically, steel will corrode at some point, but the high alkalinity passivates the steel until the pH falls, deleterious ions enter the concrete, or the electrical potential of the steel changes. On Thursday, Dec. 16, Frank Rea of Consulex will host a ...

When premature coating failures occur, there are often arguments, allegations, and finger-pointing as attempts are made to determine fault and who will be on the hook financially. Sometimes, assumptions are made with incomplete information and the rework results in a second coating failure. This workshop will follow the steps of collecting background information, conducting a site visit, forensic ...
In 2015, SSPC created a Concrete Surface Preparation Task Group to develop individual surface preparation method standards and levels for the various forms of surface preparation common in our industry. At the time, SSPC argued the industry was lacking a standard(s) to specify for surface preparation of concrete and that the SSPC-SP13/NACE No. 6 was written as a guideline and not a standard. After developing individual concrete surface preparation method standards, the objective was then to classify SSPC-SP13 as a guideline to provide concrete surface preparation commentary. To date, SSPC has published the Concrete Abrasive Blasting (CAB) standards 1–3, and ...
