Cathodic Protection 101 for the Coating Professional

On Tuesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. local time, Pete Ault and James Ellor of Elzy Technology Corp. will present information on the basics of cathodic protection (CP) on marine and underground structures that a professional working in the coatings industry needs to know.

There is an obvious overlap in corrosion control between the use of CP and coatings, as the two methods are typically used concurrently to protect assets. Thus, it is essential that coating professionals have a basic understanding of how CP works and how it affects their work.

During the technical paper session, a discussion of the basics of CP will be held, focusing on the interaction of coatings and CP, and why asset owners, spec writers, coating applicators, inspectors, and paint manufacturers all need to have an understanding of CP mechanisms to adequately do their jobs. Other talks during the session will focus on case studies of coating failures and research testing development and evaluation activities in the area of CP and coatings.

This session will be followed by a two-hour workshop with hands-on experiments and training for all types of coating professionals, including engineers, inspectors, coating formulators, etc. The workshop will demonstrate basic CP principles with small table level experiments, demonstrate the use of CP and coating test instruments, and provide for a face-to-face informal Q&A session for coating professionals to have their CP-related questions answered.

Join the session at the Phoenix Convention Center, North 227 A-B.
