Cathodic Protection, Coatings Workshop Gets Interactive

One of the more interactive workshops of the Coatings+ 2021 conference was “Cathodic Protection for the Coating Professional,” which was held Tuesday afternoon and presented by Elzy Technology Corp.’s Pete Ault and James Ellor.

The presentation portion of the workshop explored the basics of cathodic protection (CP) on marine and underground structures. The presenters focused on the interaction of coatings and CP, with an explanation of why asset owners, spec writers, coating applicators, inspectors, and paint manufacturers should all have an understanding of CP mechanisms in order to do their jobs most effectively. Other discussion points included case studies of coating failures and research, development, testing, and evaluation efforts in the area of CP and coatings.

After the paper session, the speakers led a detailed workshop, which featured hands-on experiments and training for engineers, inspectors, coating formulators, and other coatings industry professionals. The objective was to demonstrate basic CP principles with small, table-level experiments; show the use of CP and coating test instruments; and allow for a face-to-face, informal Q&A session regarding CP-related questions.

Other Coatings+ workshops that were held Tuesday included:

  • Inspector Level Training and Certifications—What’s New and What’s Changed (presented by AMPP’s Dave Evans and Alicia Yust)
  • Oil and Gas Pipelines—Coating Failure or End of Coating Life (presented by Kinder Morgan’s Jeffrey Didas)
  • What’s New With the QP Program? (presented by Dave Evans, AMPP’s director of QP and coatings credentialing)

All Coatings+ 2021 workshops are being held inside the Phoenix Convention Center.
